- Set the infiltration ring on the soil surface at the test spot and photograph it in place.
- Pour in one inch of water and time how many minutes it takes to soak in.
- Take a sample of the soil from the test spot and score its aggregate stability on the 1 to 6 class scale.
- Add a short note on the visible organic matter and root growth you saw.
- Record the photo, GPS waypoint, infiltration time, aggregate stability class and organic matter and root note in the proof record.

Soil Health. Soil health is the discovery, now written into USDA standards, that soil is not dirt but a living body: it breathes, digests, holds water, and can sicken or recover. The tests are wonderfully physical. Time how fast water soaks in. See whether a clod holds together in water or falls apart. Smell for the sweetness of organic matter.
