How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 60–180 minutes. Method of record: Living Building Challenge 4.0 Health + Happiness Petal — indoor environmental quality work verified by condition, with lead-safe and moisture rules non-negotiable
Bring
- N95 or better respirator
- gloves + eye protection
- plastic sheeting + painter's tape
- moisture meter if available
- HEPA vacuum
- camera + phone with GPS
Steps
- 1. Photograph the area BEFORE, with GPS and timestamp, including any staining or damage.
- 2. Establish the building's age; pre-1978 means assume lead until tested.
- 3. Contain the work area with sheeting; close vents inside it so dust does not travel the ducts.
- 4. Find and fix the MOISTURE SOURCE first — surface treatment over an active leak fails within weeks.
- 5. Do the specified work wet, not dry, wherever dust is possible.
- 6. HEPA-vacuum the area, then wipe, then HEPA-vacuum again.
- 7. Remove containment inward so dust stays inside the sheeting; bag and seal.
- 8. Photograph AFTER from the same positions and record the moisture reading if metered.
If it does not match the plan
- Pre-1978 building with disturbed paint -> RRP lead-safe certified work only; stop if not certified.
- Visible mould over roughly 1 square metre -> professional remediation; document and stop.
- Moisture source cannot be identified -> do not cover it; flag the packet.
- Any suspected asbestos material -> stop, do not disturb, licensed abatement only.
- Occupants (especially children or pregnant people) present in the work area -> do not start until relocated.
What counts as done
- Before and after photos from the same position, timestamped, GPS inside the radius
- Moisture source identified and addressed, recorded in the proof — not merely covered
- Containment visible in a work-in-progress photo
- Lead-safe practices documented for any pre-1978 building
- Final HEPA-vacuum and wipe recorded
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
