- Pour water into the ring up to a depth of 1 inch, start a timer, and record the minutes the water takes to soak in. Photograph the ring test.
- Take a small lump of surface soil from beside the ring, crumble it gently between your fingers, and give it an aggregate stability class from 1 to 6 for how well it holds together.
- Look at the soil and the patch for visible organic matter and roots, and write a short note on what you see.
- Record the photo, GPS waypoint, soak-in minutes, aggregate stability class and organic matter note in the proof record.
