Anyone can start here · a foothill ranch home in the wildland-urban interface west of Worland, WY 82401
Document defensible space at a foothill ranch home, near Worland
This ranch home sits against sagebrush-and-juniper foothills west of Worland with dense brush right up against the porch — nobody has ever documented whether the structure's ignition zones meet Firewise guidance. Standard: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment and vegetation management (Zone 0 0-5ft, Zone 1 5-30ft, Zone 2 30-100ft). Entry rung is documentation-only from a safe public vantage; hands-on vegetation clearing near structures/slopes is licensed or credentialed-crew work only. SDG 11.b resilience. Proof: document-only zone photo set (0-5/5-30/30-100 ft) + checklist + GPS Method (NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment and vegetation management (Zone 0 0-5ft, Zone 1 5-30ft, Zone 2 30-100ft). Document only — photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway and yard edge; do not enter dense brush or approach any structurally questionable outbuilding. 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from a safe public/yard vantage. 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, and any firewood stacked against the structure. 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear or cut anything yourself during this survey. Done when: document-only zone photo set (0-5/5-30/30-100 ft) + checklist + GPS
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment — documentation-only from a safe public/yard vantage
Bring
- camera with zoom
- GPS-capable phone
- tape measure or pace-count reference
- Firewise USA zone checklist
- field notebook
Steps
- 1. Document only — photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway or yard edge; never enter dense brush or approach a structurally questionable outbuilding.
- 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from the safe vantage.
- 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, vents, and any firewood or combustible material stacked against the structure.
- 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed/credentialed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear, cut, or move anything during this survey.
If it does not match the plan
- Any combustible material (mulch, firewood, dry vegetation) touching the structure in Zone 0 -> flag as highest-priority clearing item.
- Ladder fuel (brush contacting tree canopy) found in Zone 1 -> flag for a credentialed crew's thinning pass.
- Any structurally unstable or fire-damaged outbuilding observed -> do not approach; note location only and route to the local fire authority.
What counts as done
- Photo set covering all three ignition zones from a safe, named vantage point
- Roof/gutter/combustible-storage condition photographed
- Zone-by-zone checklist compiled naming the follow-on clearing job
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
