Safety, read before you claim

Anyone able to fill and tamp potholes by hand can do this; this job asks for no licence or supervision. Use hand tools and a hand tamper only, never excavation equipment; work from the alley shoulder, in a high-visibility vest if any vehicle traffic is present; get flagger training and an approved traffic control plan before any work in the roadway.

Steps

Walk the alley behind the 3400 block of 4th Avenue and find each pothole. Work from the alley shoulder.
Photograph each pothole with a ruler laid across it so the depth reads in the photo.
Clear loose gravel, dirt and standing water out of each pothole by hand.
Fill each pothole with cold-patch asphalt mix in layers, pressing each layer down firmly with a hand tamper and counting the tamper passes.
Keep tamping until the patch sits level with the pavement around it.
Photograph each finished patch from the same spot as its before photo, showing the fill level with the surrounding pavement.
Write the materials note: the cold-patch mix used and the tamper passes per pothole. Enter the before and after photos and the note in the proof record.
