How this work is done

A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 60–180 minutes. Method of record: SDG 15 (Life on Land) target 15.1/15.5 — site-level terrestrial restoration: plant, tend, and record survival so the gain is measurable a year later, not just on the day

Bring

• gloves + closed-toe boots
• spade or planting bar
• 5-gallon water container or hose access
• mulch (wood chip, 5cm depth)
• measuring tape
• phone with GPS + camera
• site plan or marked planting locations

Steps

1. 1. Photograph the site BEFORE touching anything, with GPS on and a timestamp visible.
2. 2. Confirm you are inside the posting radius; record the waypoint.
3. 3. Call 811 (or local utility locate) before ANY digging deeper than 30cm. Do not dig on an unlocated site.
4. 4. Dig each hole twice the width of the root ball and no deeper — the root flare must sit level with grade, never buried.
5. 5. Set the plant, backfill with native soil only (no fertiliser at planting), and firm gently to remove air pockets.
6. 6. Water in immediately until the soil is saturated, roughly 10-20L per woody plant.
7. 7. Mulch to 5cm depth, pulled back 8cm from the stem so the bark never sits wet.
8. 8. Photograph AFTER, from the same position as the before shot, and record species, count, and spacing.

If it does not match the plan

• Utilities not located, or locate marks cross your dig area -> stop, document, do not dig.
• Soil is saturated or frozen -> reschedule; planting into either kills survival rate.
• Species is listed invasive in this jurisdiction -> do not plant; document and flag the packet.
• Root ball is dry on arrival -> soak fully before planting or survival is forfeit.
• Slope steeper than 3:1 -> add erosion control (wattle or matting) or the planting washes out.

What counts as done

• Before and after photos from the same position, both with GPS inside the posting radius and legible timestamps
• Root flare visible at grade on every plant in the after photo — not buried, not proud
• Mulch present at ~5cm and pulled back from every stem
• Species, count, and spacing recorded in the proof record
• 811/utility locate confirmed in the record for any dig over 30cm

Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
