Walk the weekly truck and air observation round in Hunts Point (2026-07-18)
Some fifteen thousand truck trips a day serve the Hunts Point markets, and the idling queues stack beside homes and schools. Dated, consistent observation logs of queue lengths, idling time, and visible exhaust are the evidence base community groups bring to fleet-electrification and routing fights. Standard: EPA community air observation guidance + NYC idling law (3-minute limit); SDG 3 + SDG 11. Proof: Completed observation log with GPS/time-stamped queue photos Method (EPA community air observation guidance + NYC idling law (3-minute limit); SDG 3 + SDG 11.): 1. Walk the fixed public route past the market gate queues at the same hour each week. 2. Count queued and idling trucks at each observation point and note duration where observable. 3. Photograph queues and any visible exhaust plume from the public sidewalk with GPS and time. 4. Record wind and weather. 5. Submit the completed log and photos the same day. Done when: Completed observation log with GPS/time-stamped queue photos
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: EPA NAAQS community ambient-air screening (PM2.5)
Bring
- calibrated PM2.5 monitor
- GPS phone
- wind/weather note source
- hi-vis vest
- camera
Steps
- 1. Choose >=3 points (near-source/roadside, mid, background); record GPS at each; stay off the roadway.
- 2. Photograph each monitoring location.
- 3. Log PM2.5 (ug/m3) at each point over a comparable peak period.
- 4. Record wind direction, time, and nearby source activity (e.g., truck traffic).
- 5. Compare readings to the NAAQS reference.
- 6. Enter the PM2.5 logs, wind/time, source note, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Roadside work near heavy traffic -> stay off travel lanes; hi-vis at all times.
- Near-source PM2.5 well above background and NAAQS -> flag an environmental-justice exposure concern.
What counts as done
- PM2.5 logged at >=3 points (near-source / mid / background)
- Wind direction + time recorded
- Source-activity observation recorded
- GPS waypoints + location photos
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
