Map the empty tree spots in Springfield's asthma corridor neighborhoods
Springfield, Massachusetts has repeatedly ranked the nation's asthma capital, and its hardest-hit neighborhoods — the North End, Mason Square — are also its barest of trees beside the highway corridors. The planting campaign starts with a block-accurate map of every empty pit, dead tree, and plantable verge. Standard: Greening the Gateway Cities program intake practice (MA DCR); SDG 3 + SDG 11. Proof: Completed block survey with a GPS-tagged photo per finding Method (Greening the Gateway Cities program intake practice (MA DCR); SDG 3 + SDG 11.): 1. Walk both faces of the assigned block with the survey form. 2. Record every existing tree and its condition, every empty pit, and every plantable verge length clear of utilities and drives. 3. Mark all entries on the block map. 4. Photograph each empty pit and dead tree with GPS and date. 5. Submit the completed survey the same day. Done when: Completed block survey with a GPS-tagged photo per finding
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30–60 minutes. Method of record: i-Tree canopy / street-tree inventory
Bring
- GPS phone
- DBH tape or measuring tape
- tree ID reference
- camera
- hi-vis vest
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
- 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
- 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
- 4. Count vacant planting sites.
- 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
- High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
What counts as done
- Per-tree species + condition + DBH recorded
- Vacant planting sites counted
- GPS waypoint per tree
- Photo per surveyed tree
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
