Walk and photograph Corcoran's neighborhood drainage before the next wet winter
In 2023 the returned Tulare Lake pressed against Corcoran's levee and the town learned how thin its margin is; the ground here also sinks measurably each year, changing how water moves. Blocked inlets, silted gutters, and low spots in town decide whose living room floods first in the next big winter. A walked, photographed drainage survey of assigned blocks gives the town a current map of its weak points. Standard: FEMA community flood-preparedness practice + Kings County flood context; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 Climate Action. Proof: Photo log of drainage findings plus marked block map with GPS/date Method (FEMA community flood-preparedness practice + Kings County flood context; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 Climate Action.): 1. Walk every street of the assigned blocks and locate each storm inlet and drainage path. 2. Photograph and log every blocked inlet, silted gutter, and visible low spot that ponds. 3. Note curb and pavement cracking that redirects flow toward structures. 4. Mark each finding on the block map with severity. 5. Compile the photo log and record the survey with GPS and date. Done when: Photo log of drainage findings plus marked block map with GPS/date
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: FEMA floodplain + green-infrastructure siting screen
Bring
- GPS phone
- tape/ruler for deposition depth
- metals field kit (if sediment screen in scope)
- boots + gloves
- camera
Steps
- 1. Confirm post-event conditions are safe; navigate to the site; record GPS.
- 2. Photograph deposited sediment / affected area.
- 3. Measure deposition depth at representative points.
- 4. If a sediment contaminant screen is in scope, run the metals field kit and record values.
- 5. Note debris, hazards, and the extent (sketch).
- 6. Enter depth, any analytes, hazard notes, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Unstable ground / submerged debris / contaminated water -> document from safe footing; do not enter.
- Elevated metals in deposited sediment -> flag before any reuse; recommend lab confirm.
What counts as done
- Deposition depth recorded at representative points
- Metals screen recorded (if in scope)
- Debris/hazard note + extent sketch
- GPS waypoint + timestamped photos
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
