Walk and photograph Olivehurst and Linda's neighborhood drainage before the wet season
Linda and Olivehurst sit low behind Yuba County levees that failed catastrophically in 1986 and again threatened in 1997, flooding thousands of homes; the neighborhoods remain among the state's most flood-exposed. Whether the next big winter becomes a disaster inside the neighborhoods also depends on small things: blocked inlets, silted ditches, ponding low spots. A walked, photographed drainage survey of assigned blocks builds the current weak-point map before the rain. Standard: FEMA community flood-preparedness practice + Yuba County flood history; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 Climate Action. Proof: Photo log of findings plus marked block map with GPS/date Method (FEMA community flood-preparedness practice + Yuba County flood history; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 Climate Action.): 1. Walk every street of the assigned blocks locating inlets, ditches, and drainage paths. 2. Photograph and log every blocked inlet, silted ditch section, and ponding low spot. 3. Note curb and pavement conditions that redirect flow toward homes. 4. Mark findings on the block map with severity. 5. Compile the photo log and record the survey with GPS and date. Done when: Photo log of findings plus marked block map with GPS/date
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: FEMA floodplain + green-infrastructure siting screen
Bring
- GPS phone
- tape/ruler for deposition depth
- metals field kit (if sediment screen in scope)
- boots + gloves
- camera
Steps
- 1. Confirm post-event conditions are safe; navigate to the site; record GPS.
- 2. Photograph deposited sediment / affected area.
- 3. Measure deposition depth at representative points.
- 4. If a sediment contaminant screen is in scope, run the metals field kit and record values.
- 5. Note debris, hazards, and the extent (sketch).
- 6. Enter depth, any analytes, hazard notes, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Unstable ground / submerged debris / contaminated water -> document from safe footing; do not enter.
- Elevated metals in deposited sediment -> flag before any reuse; recommend lab confirm.
What counts as done
- Deposition depth recorded at representative points
- Metals screen recorded (if in scope)
- Debris/hazard note + extent sketch
- GPS waypoint + timestamped photos
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
