Walk Sanger's hottest bare blocks and map every empty tree spot
South of Jensen Avenue, whole block faces in Sanger have no street trees at all, and summer afternoons top 105 degrees on bare pavement. Before planting crews can work, someone has to walk the blocks and record where trees are missing, where wires and narrow strips rule spots out, and which blocks bake worst. Standard: CalEPA Urban Heat Island Index + city street-tree guidance; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities. Proof: Photo log of every block face with tree/no-tree notes and a ranked top-ten list Method (CalEPA Urban Heat Island Index + city street-tree guidance; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.): 1. Walk the marked blocks in morning hours and record every existing street tree and every empty planting spot. 2. Note strip width, overhead wires, and the nearest water access for each empty spot. 3. Rank the ten hottest, barest block faces so planting starts where shade is needed most. 4. Photograph each block face and log your notes, with GPS and date at every stop. Done when: Photo log of every block face with tree/no-tree notes and a ranked top-ten list
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30–60 minutes. Method of record: i-Tree canopy / street-tree inventory
Bring
- GPS phone
- DBH tape or measuring tape
- tree ID reference
- camera
- hi-vis vest
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
- 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
- 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
- 4. Count vacant planting sites.
- 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
- High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
What counts as done
- Per-tree species + condition + DBH recorded
- Vacant planting sites counted
- GPS waypoint per tree
- Photo per surveyed tree
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
