Clean up a dumped-on vacant lot in Osborn, Detroit (2026-07-18)
Vacant lots on Detroit's east side attract repeat illegal dumping — tires, furniture, construction debris — and every load left standing invites the next one. Clearing a lot and keeping it visibly maintained is the proven way to break the dumping cycle on a block. Standard: Detroit Land Bank Authority side-lot maintenance practice + EPA illegal dumping prevention guidance; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities. Proof: Before/after photos plus debris count at the pickup point Method (Detroit Land Bank Authority side-lot maintenance practice + EPA illegal dumping prevention guidance; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.): 1. Photograph the lot's starting condition from two angles. 2. Bag litter and stack tires, furniture, and bulk debris at the legal curb pickup point for bulk collection. 3. Cut weeds and overgrowth to a tidy height with hand tools or a push mower. 4. Leave any drums, containers with unknown contents, or needles in place and photograph them for a report. 5. Photograph the cleared lot from the same angles with GPS and date on and record the debris count. Done when: Before/after photos plus debris count at the pickup point
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30–60 minutes. Method of record: i-Tree canopy / street-tree inventory
Bring
- GPS phone
- DBH tape or measuring tape
- tree ID reference
- camera
- hi-vis vest
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
- 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
- 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
- 4. Count vacant planting sites.
- 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
- High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
What counts as done
- Per-tree species + condition + DBH recorded
- Vacant planting sites counted
- GPS waypoint per tree
- Photo per surveyed tree
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
