Install ember-resistant vent screens at a Grass Valley pine-forest home
With the needle bed cleared around this Grass Valley home, the open foundation and attic vents remain the next weak point for wind-blown embers looking for a way in. Fine ember-resistant screens close that gap for good. Standard: CAL FIRE / IBHS ember-resistant vent screen standard + SDG 11 Proof: Photo of each installed ember-resistant vent screen Method (CAL FIRE / IBHS ember-resistant vent screen standard + SDG 11): 1. Identify every foundation, attic, and eave vent on the home. 2. Measure each vent opening for the correct screen size. 3. Remove any existing coarse mesh from the vent frame. 4. Fit and fasten the 1/8-inch or finer ember-resistant screen to each vent. 5. Check that each screen sits flush with no gaps at the edges. 6. Photograph each completed vent screen installation. Done when: Photo of each installed ember-resistant vent screen
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45โ90 minutes. Method of record: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment โ documentation-only from a safe public/yard vantage
Bring
- camera with zoom
- GPS-capable phone
- tape measure or pace-count reference
- Firewise USA zone checklist
- field notebook
Steps
- 1. Document only โ photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway or yard edge; never enter dense brush or approach a structurally questionable outbuilding.
- 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from the safe vantage.
- 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, vents, and any firewood or combustible material stacked against the structure.
- 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed/credentialed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear, cut, or move anything during this survey.
If it does not match the plan
- Any combustible material (mulch, firewood, dry vegetation) touching the structure in Zone 0 -> flag as highest-priority clearing item.
- Ladder fuel (brush contacting tree canopy) found in Zone 1 -> flag for a credentialed crew's thinning pass.
- Any structurally unstable or fire-damaged outbuilding observed -> do not approach; note location only and route to the local fire authority.
What counts as done
- Photo set covering all three ignition zones from a safe, named vantage point
- Roof/gutter/combustible-storage condition photographed
- Zone-by-zone checklist compiled naming the follow-on clearing job
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
