Plant shade trees on the low-canopy blocks of Syracuse's South Side

Syracuse's South Side lost much of its elm-era canopy and never got it back, leaving blocks that run hotter in summer and barer in winter than the city's east-side parks. Every approved pit planted is shade, stormwater capture, and a cooler porch within a decade. Standard: Syracuse urban forestry master plan planting standard; SDG 11 + SDG 13. Collect the approved pit list and stock from the host planting program. 2. Dig each hole twice root-ball width, root flare at grade. 3. Set plumb, backfill in firmed lifts, and build a watering ring. 4. Water in with 15 gallons and mulch off the flare. 5. Photograph each planted tree with GPS and date and log species and location. How this work is done

Steps

1. 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
2. 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
3. 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
4. 4. Count vacant planting sites.
5. 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.

If it does not match the plan

• Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
• High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
