Plant street trees on the mapped blocks of Springfield's asthma corridors

Every tree planted in Springfield's North End and Mason Square works against the particulate load that gave the city its asthma-capital ranking. The state's gateway-city planting push has stock and pits; the bottleneck is hands planting them right. Standard: Greening the Gateway Cities planting specification (MA DCR); SDG 3 + SDG 13. Collect the approved pit list and stock from the host program. 2. Dig each prepared pit to root-ball depth with the flare at grade. 3. Set plumb, backfill in firmed lifts, and build a watering ring. 4. Water in with 15 to 20 gallons and mulch off the flare. 5. How this work is done

Steps

1. 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
2. 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
3. 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
4. 4. Count vacant planting sites.
5. 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.

If it does not match the plan

• Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
• High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
