Keep a winter air diary on a Nadezhda street during Sofia's coal-and-wood heating season (2026-07-19)
Sofia's winter smog comes largely from home coal and wood heating in older neighborhoods like Nadezhda, and the city's own low-emission-zone rollout needs a real, dated street-level record, not just central monitoring-station numbers. Standard: Sofia Municipality Low Emission Zone program + WHO air quality guideline PM10/PM2.5 + SDG 3 & 11. Proof: Dated photo series plus written air-quality note Method (Sofia Municipality Low Emission Zone program + WHO air quality guideline PM10/PM2.5 + SDG 3 & 11.): 1. Stand at the same fixed street vantage point at the same time each visit. 2. Photograph the sky and any visible chimney or stack smoke. 3. Note the day's published municipal or regional air-quality reading if available. 4. Log any visible haze, odor, or unusual smoke sources without approaching them. 5. Record the date, time, and GPS pin in the diary. Done when: Dated photo series plus written air-quality note
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: EPA NAAQS community ambient-air screening (PM2.5)
Bring
- calibrated PM2.5 monitor
- GPS phone
- wind/weather note source
- hi-vis vest
- camera
Steps
- 1. Choose >=3 points (near-source/roadside, mid, background); record GPS at each; stay off the roadway.
- 2. Photograph each monitoring location.
- 3. Log PM2.5 (ug/m3) at each point over a comparable peak period.
- 4. Record wind direction, time, and nearby source activity (e.g., truck traffic).
- 5. Compare readings to the NAAQS reference.
- 6. Enter the PM2.5 logs, wind/time, source note, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Roadside work near heavy traffic -> stay off travel lanes; hi-vis at all times.
- Near-source PM2.5 well above background and NAAQS -> flag an environmental-justice exposure concern.
What counts as done
- PM2.5 logged at >=3 points (near-source / mid / background)
- Wind direction + time recorded
- Source-activity observation recorded
- GPS waypoints + location photos
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
