Plant shade trees on a bare Maryvale schoolyard with school staff
Maryvale schoolyards are wide fields of bare dirt and asphalt where kids play in full desert sun; surface temperatures on playground blacktop can pass 150 degrees. Desert shade trees planted along fences and play areas โ with the school's invitation โ cool recess for a generation of kids. Standard: City of Phoenix Tree and Shade Master Plan schools priority; SDG 11 and SDG 3. Proof: Before/after photos + species/count with GPS Method (City of Phoenix Tree and Shade Master Plan schools priority; SDG 11 and SDG 3.): 1. Coordinate with school staff on planting spots, species, and utility clearance via 811. 2. Dig wide, shallow planting holes with hand tools at each approved spot. 3. Plant desert-adapted shade trees, set watering basins, and mulch each well. 4. Water each tree deeply and install trunk guards where mowers pass. 5. Photograph each planted tree and record count, species, and GPS. Done when: Before/after photos + species/count with GPS
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30โ60 minutes. Method of record: i-Tree canopy / street-tree inventory
Bring
- GPS phone
- DBH tape or measuring tape
- tree ID reference
- camera
- hi-vis vest
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
- 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
- 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
- 4. Count vacant planting sites.
- 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
- High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
What counts as done
- Per-tree species + condition + DBH recorded
- Vacant planting sites counted
- GPS waypoint per tree
- Photo per surveyed tree
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
