Plant shade trees at the International District's bare bus stops
Central Avenue's rapid transit carries the district's workforce, and many stops offer a bench in full sun at 100 degrees. Shade trees planted at stop-adjacent parkways — with city right-of-way approval — cool the daily wait for thousands of riders who have no car waiting as a backup. Standard: City of Albuquerque Let's Plant ABQ / right-of-way planting practice; SDG 11. Proof: Planted-tree photos + count with GPS Method (City of Albuquerque Let's Plant ABQ / right-of-way planting practice; SDG 11.): 1. Confirm the approved planting spots near stops and call 811. 2. Dig wide planting holes with hand tools. 3. Plant tough high-desert shade trees such as desert willow and honey locust. 4. Basin, mulch, water deeply, and stake against wind. 5. Photograph each planted tree and record with date and GPS. Done when: Planted-tree photos + count with GPS
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30–60 minutes. Method of record: i-Tree canopy / street-tree inventory
Bring
- GPS phone
- DBH tape or measuring tape
- tree ID reference
- camera
- hi-vis vest
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.

- 4. Count vacant planting sites.
- 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
