Refill the safety mulch under a Liberty City playground
Playground fall-cushion mulch compacts and scatters until bare hard ground sits under the monkey bars — and in a neighborhood short on safe play space, closed or hazardous equipment hits hardest. Refilling engineered wood mulch to proper depth is straightforward wheelbarrow work that reopens safe play. Twelve inches of cushion is the difference between a scare and a cast. Standard: CPSC public playground surfacing guidance; SDG 11.7. Proof: Depth-ruler before/after photos per zone Method (CPSC public playground surfacing guidance; SDG 11.7.): 1. Confirm the refill with the parks contact and photograph the bare zones with a depth ruler. 2. Wheelbarrow certified playground mulch from the delivery pile to each use zone. 3. Rake level to the certified depth, deepest under swings and slide exits. 4. Re-measure depth at the marked points. 5. Photograph the finished zones with the ruler showing depth, GPS and date. Done when: Depth-ruler before/after photos per zone
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30–60 minutes. Method of record: Community-coordination hazard survey (documentation + coordination only; severity-tagged)
Bring
- GPS phone
- camera
- hi-vis vest
- severity-tag reference (minor|moderate|severe|critical)
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor from a safe path; record a GPS waypoint at each hazard.
- 2. Photograph each hazard.
- 3. Classify the hazard type and assign a severity tag (minor|moderate|severe|critical).
- 4. Name the responsible handoff target (BID / city agency / utility).
- 5. Enter each hazard's type, severity, GPS, photo, and handoff target into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- NEVER perform repair or enter the roadway/public right-of-way -> documentation and coordination only.
- Any severity:critical (e.g., live downed wire, open utility vault) -> flag immediately to the responsible agency; keep clear.
What counts as done
- Each hazard photographed with a GPS waypoint
- Severity tag assigned per hazard
- Hazard type classified
- Named handoff target per hazard
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
