Change the air filters monthly in invited National City homes near the freeway (2026-07-20)
Homes along Interstate 5 and the 54 interchange in National City filter freeway air through whatever screen sits in a decades-old furnace, if any. A monthly invited filter round is a cheap, repeating act that directly cleans what families breathe. Standard: EPA indoor air filtration guidance โ SDG 3. Proof: Old/new filter photos per home Method (EPA indoor air filtration guidance โ SDG 3.): 1. Confirm invitations and list filter sizes on the first visit. 2. Replace or wash furnace, window-unit, and portable filters each round. 3. Wipe grilles and note any unit that needs repair beyond a filter. 4. Photograph old and new filters side by side per home with GPS and date. Done when: Old/new filter photos per home
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45โ90 minutes. Method of record: ASHRAE 62.1 + EPA IAQ / moisture baseline
Bring
- CO2 monitor
- PM2.5 monitor
- temp/RH meter
- moisture meter (mold/moisture scope)
- GPS/address
- camera
Steps
- 1. Confirm the room/unit and address; coordinate to sample during normal occupancy where relevant.
- 2. Photograph the space and any staining/damp/mold.
- 3. Place the monitor in the occupied zone; log CO2 over >=1 occupied hour.
- 4. Record PM2.5, temperature, and relative humidity.
- 5. For moisture/mold scope, take moisture-meter readings at affected vs baseline areas and estimate visible mold area.
- 6. Note ventilation type and any obvious deficiencies.
- 7. Enter the logs, readings, extent notes, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Carbon monoxide > 9 ppm sustained in an occupied space, or any audible CO alarm -> STOP: life-safety hazard. Evacuate, ventilate, and call the gas utility / fire department now. The agent escalates immediately, never sources the leak (NIOSH/ASHRAE CO).
- CO2 sustained > 2000 ppm in an occupied space -> flag acute under-ventilation: recommend increasing outdoor air and reducing occupancy immediately and report to the facility manager (well above the 1000 ppm ASHRAE 62.1 comfort flag).
- CO2 sustained > 1000 ppm -> flag under-ventilation vs ASHRAE 62.1.
- PM2.5 > 35 ug/m3 (24-hr, EPA NAAQS) -> flag elevated particulate; > 55 ug/m3 -> recommend occupants limit exposure / use filtration now.
- Visible mold > 10 sq ft OR active water intrusion -> document only, do not disturb; route to a licensed remediation pro (EPA mold guidance); occupants with respiratory symptoms routed to relocate.
What counts as done
- CO2 logged over >=1 occupied hour
- PM2.5, temperature, and RH recorded
- Moisture readings + visible-mold extent recorded (moisture scope)
- Timestamped photos + address confirm
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
