Re-putty the loose window glass in an invited Eureka Victorian
Eureka's Victorian-era homes still carry their original single-pane wood sashes, and a century of coastal damp has cracked the glazing putty that holds the glass. Loose panes rattle, leak heat, and eventually fall out. Re-glazing keeps the historic windows working instead of pushing owners toward costly full replacement. Standard: National Park Service Preservation Brief 9, wooden window repair; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities. Proof: Before/after photos of each re-glazed sash Method (National Park Service Preservation Brief 9, wooden window repair; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.): 1. Confirm the invitation and photograph each ground-floor sash with cracked or missing putty. 2. Carefully remove loose old putty with a putty knife without prying against the glass. 3. Press new glazing points where missing and bed a smooth line of glazing compound around the pane. 4. Tool the compound to a clean bevel and wipe the glass. 5. Let the occupant know the curing and paint-over timeline. 6. Photograph each finished sash and record address block and date. Done when: Before/after photos of each re-glazed sash
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: Re-glazing a cracked or broken window pane and re-puttying its sash on an older rowhouse window, from the interior/ground level
Bring
- glazier's points + glazing putty/compound
- putty knife + heat gun or scraper (old putty removal)
- replacement glass pane cut to size + gloves + safety glasses
- camera
Steps
- 1. ASSESS: photograph the cracked/broken pane and measure the sash opening; confirm the work is reachable from inside or ground level (no exterior ladder work).
- 2. Remove the old, failed putty and any broken glass safely (gloves + safety glasses), and clean the sash rabbet.
- 3. Set the new pane on a thin bed of putty, secure with glazier's points, and apply and tool the finish putty bead to a clean, weathertight line.
- 4. Let the putty skin over per the product's cure time, then photograph the finished, weathertight pane from the same before vantage.
If it does not match the plan
- Sash wood itself is rotted or the frame won't hold points/putty -> STOP; name the window-replacement job instead.
- Any exterior access above ground level required -> STOP; route to a job authored with proper fall-protection framing.
What counts as done
- Old broken glass and failed putty fully removed and safely disposed
- New pane set, pointed and puttied to a clean, weathertight bead
- Before/after photos from a matching vantage
- Work done from interior/ground level only
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
