advanced work · an owner-invited ranch home along Hyampom Road, Hayfork, CA 96041
Clear defensible vegetation around the above-ground propane tank, tank 2 -- an owner-invited ranch home along Hyampom Road, Hayfork, CA 96041
The survey found dry brush and dead grass growing right up against this rural property's above-ground propane tank, a real ember-ignition and radiant-heat exposure the NFPA 58/CAL FIRE 10-foot clearance standard exists to prevent. Standard: NFPA 58 LP-Gas Code + CAL FIRE PRC 4291 defensible-space vegetation-clearance-around-fuel-tank practice; SDG 11.b/13 resilience. Proof: before/after photos of the clearance radius + tank-fitting stand-off confirm + green-waste disposal photo + GPS Method (NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment — documentation-only from a safe public/yard vantage, ~45-90 min): 1. Document only — photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway or yard edge; never enter dense brush or approach a structurally questionable outbuilding. 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from the safe vantage. 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, vents, and any firewood or combustible material stacked against the structure. 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed/credentialed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear, cut, or move anything during this survey. Equipment: camera with zoom, GPS-capable phone, tape measure or pace-count reference, Firewise USA zone checklist, field notebook Done when: Photo set covering all three ignition zones from a safe, named vantage point; Roof/gutter/combustible-storage condition photographed; Zone-by-zone checklist compiled naming the follow-on clearing job
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45–90 minutes. Method of record: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment — documentation-only from a safe public/yard vantage
Bring
- camera with zoom
- GPS-capable phone
- tape measure or pace-count reference
- Firewise USA zone checklist
- field notebook
Steps
- 1. Document only — photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway or yard edge; never enter dense brush or approach a structurally questionable outbuilding.
- 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from the safe vantage.
- 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, vents, and any firewood or combustible material stacked against the structure.
- 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed/credentialed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear, cut, or move anything during this survey.
If it does not match the plan
- Any combustible material (mulch, firewood, dry vegetation) touching the structure in Zone 0 -> flag as highest-priority clearing item.
- Ladder fuel (brush contacting tree canopy) found in Zone 1 -> flag for a credentialed crew's thinning pass.
- Any structurally unstable or fire-damaged outbuilding observed -> do not approach; note location only and route to the local fire authority.
What counts as done
- Photo set covering all three ignition zones from a safe, named vantage point
- Roof/gutter/combustible-storage condition photographed
- Zone-by-zone checklist compiled naming the follow-on clearing job
