Anyone can start here · resident homes along the N Temple Drive / Park Street corridor, Diboll, TX 75941 (own-home)
Replace high-flammability shrubs with firewise native planting at a resident's own home on the corridor, home 2, resident homes along the N Temple Drive / Park Street corridor, Diboll, TX 75941 (own-home) (2026-07-24)
This home's foundation planting includes resinous, high-flammability shrubs sitting inside the defensible-space zone, in a piney-woods town surrounded by pine forest where a wildland fire is a real seasonal risk. Standard: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment and vegetation management (Zone 0 0-5ft, Zone 1 5-30ft, Zone 2 30-100ft), applied here to a home in the piney-woods wildland-urban interface surrounding Diboll. Entry rung is documentation-only or occupant-safe ground-level work from a safe vantage; hands-on vegetation clearing with power tools near structures/slopes is licensed or credentialed-crew work only. SDG 11.b resilience. Proof: homeowner/resident-permission record + before/after photos + species removed/installed record + GPS Method (NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment and vegetation management (Zone 0 0-5ft, Zone 1 5-30ft, Zone 2 30-100ft), applied here to a home in the piney-woods wildland-urban interface surrounding Diboll. Entry rung is documentation-only or occupant-safe ground-level work from a safe vantage; hands-on vegetation clearing with power tools near structures/slopes is licensed or credentialed-crew work only. SDG 11.b resilience.): 1. 1. Walk the home's defensible-space zone with the resident and identify high-flammability shrubs (resinous, oily, or dense evergreen species) within 5 to 30 feet of the structure, photographing them before removal. 2. 2. Remove the identified high-flammability shrubs by hand or with hand tools, staying clear of the foundation and any utility line. 3. 3. Plant a low-flammability native replacement species (broadleaf, high-moisture-content, well-spaced) in the cleared area at the design spacing. 4. 4. Water in the new planting and photograph the finished defensible-space zone from the matching before vantage, recording species removed and installed. Done when: homeowner/resident-permission record + before/after photos + species removed/installed record + GPS
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45โ90 minutes. Method of record: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment โ documentation-only from a safe public/yard vantage
Bring
- camera with zoom
- GPS-capable phone
- tape measure or pace-count reference
- Firewise USA zone checklist
- field notebook
Steps
- 1. Document only โ photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway or yard edge; never enter dense brush or approach a structurally questionable outbuilding.
- 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from the safe vantage.
- 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, vents, and any firewood or combustible material stacked against the structure.
- 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed/credentialed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear, cut, or move anything during this survey.
If it does not match the plan
- Any combustible material (mulch, firewood, dry vegetation) touching the structure in Zone 0 -> flag as highest-priority clearing item.
- Ladder fuel (brush contacting tree canopy) found in Zone 1 -> flag for a credentialed crew's thinning pass.
- Any structurally unstable or fire-damaged outbuilding observed -> do not approach; note location only and route to the local fire authority.
What counts as done
- Photo set covering all three ignition zones from a safe, named vantage point
- Roof/gutter/combustible-storage condition photographed
- Zone-by-zone checklist compiled naming the follow-on clearing job
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
