Document wildfire defensible space around a park structure at Davis Mountains State Park, site 2, Davis Mountains State Park, TX Highway 118 and Park Road 3, Fort Davis, TX 79734 (2026-07-27)

A park structure at this public state park has never had its NFPA defensible-space zones documented, in sky-island oak-and-juniper woodland where a wildland fire can move fast toward wildland-urban-interface buildings. Standard: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment and vegetation management (Zone 0 0-5ft, Zone 1 5-30ft, Zone 2 30-100ft), applied here to Davis Mountains State Park's sky-island wildland-urban-interface structures. Entry rung is documentation-only from a safe public vantage; hands-on vegetation clearing near structures/slopes is licensed or credentialed-crew work only. SDG 11.b resilience. Proof: document-only stand-off photo log + zone-by-zone observation + GPS + ranked follow-on note Method (NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment and vegetation management (Zone 0 0-5ft, Zone 1 5-30ft, Zone 2 30-100ft), applied here to Davis Mountains State Park's sky-island wildland-urban-interface structures. From a safe public vantage (trail, road, or parking area), photograph the vegetation condition within the defensible-space zones around a park structure or campground area without entering brush or climbing a slope. 2. 2. Note overhanging branches, dense brush, or ladder fuels within the zones observed from the public vantage. 3. 3. Photograph the nearest accessible structure or campground marker for the crew's reference. 4. 4. Record a ranked follow-on note naming the zone for the licensed defensible-space crew. Done when: document-only stand-off photo log + zone-by-zone observation + GPS + ranked follow-on note

How this work is done

A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 45โ€“90 minutes. Method of record: NFPA 1144 / Firewise USA structure-ignition-zone defensible-space assessment โ€” documentation-only from a safe public/yard vantage

Bring

Steps

  1. 1. Document only โ€” photograph Zone 0 (0-5 ft from the structure), Zone 1 (5-30 ft) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft) from the driveway or yard edge; never enter dense brush or approach a structurally questionable outbuilding.
  2. 2. Note vegetation type, spacing and ladder-fuel presence (brush touching tree canopy) in each zone from the safe vantage.
  3. 3. Photograph the roof material, gutters, vents, and any firewood or combustible material stacked against the structure.
  4. 4. Compile the zone-by-zone findings into a defensible-space checklist naming what a licensed/credentialed vegetation-management crew should clear first; never clear, cut, or move anything during this survey.
