Steps

1. 1. From the 40 Acre Lake observation platform or the levee-top trail, photograph a visible stretch of the oxbow lake margin, noting the approximate extent of invasive floating or emergent aquatic plant cover, without leaving the platform or levee. This work never enters the water, never wades, and never works from a boat; stay on the maintained levee, observation platform, boardwalk, or trail tread at all times and never step down onto the exposed bank below it. If the real problem needs in-water work, it stops at this bank-top or platform-top documentation or install rung, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's licensed aquatic-habitat crew is the named follow-on.
2. 2. Note whether invasive plants have crept up onto the maintained levee tread itself, distinct from plants still growing in or at the water.
3. 3. Photograph the levee-top trail surface for reference, and note any alligators visible from the platform without approaching them. American alligators are common and closely observed throughout Brazos Bend State Park, including along maintained trails well away from open water; stay at least 30 feet back from any alligator at all times, never approach, crowd, or corner one, and never feed or bait an alligator or any wildlife under any circumstance, at any skill level. A fed alligator loses its fear of people, becomes dangerous, and is usually destroyed by park staff, so preventing that habituation is the point of this work.
4. 4. Record a ranked follow on note naming the stretch for the park's habitat-management crew.

Wetland Condition. Wetlands are the landscape's kidneys and nurseries at once: they filter the water, absorb the flood, and raise the young of half the creatures around them. The EPA's rapid assessment gives a trained visitor a way to grade one honestly: the plants present, the water's path, the soil, the wear at the edges.
