  1. 1. From the public approach road shoulder, visitor center grounds, or Lakeside road, photograph a stretch of thornscrub canopy and shrub-layer structure, noting general canopy density and any structural gap, without leaving the public right of way.
  2. 2. Note whether the gap appears to be bare disturbed ground, mowed turf, or invasive grass crowding out native thornscrub structure, in general landscape terms only, never naming or implying a specific animal crossing point.
  3. 3. Photograph the surveyed stretch for reference. Tamaulipan thornscrub species (mesquite, huisache, granjeno, prickly pear) carry real thorns and spines; heavy gloves, eye protection, and long sleeves are required, and skin contact should be avoided. Venomous western diamondback rattlesnake and coral snake are present in this thornscrub and roadside brush, and Africanized honey bees are established in this region; watch foot and hand placement at all times, never reach into brush or leaf litter by hand, and give any bee activity a wide, calm berth.
  4. 4. Record a ranked follow on note naming the stretch for the refuge's native habitat restoration crew. This work never searches for, tracks, calls, baits, lures, spotlights, or photographs an ocelot or any wildlife, and never places or checks a camera trap, at any skill level. This is vegetation-structure and road-infrastructure work only.
