Never enter Old Tunnel itself, any cave, or any roost structure or crevice at any skill level; the tunnel interior is closed to the public and this work never requires entering it. All observation and work in this family happens from the public viewing area, trail tread, riverwalk path, or road vantage. Never handle, touch, move, or approach a bat, alive or dead, at any skill level. If a downed or grounded bat is found, do not pick it up; report it immediately to park staff or local animal control/health authorities instead, since bats can carry rabies. Never disturb, sweep, shovel, or otherwise aerosolize bat guano at any skill level. Where guano is present this work is observation only from a distance; guano handling is a respirator-and-training job never authored as claimable work here. No artificial lights, no loud noise, no drones, and no flash photography at or near a bat emergence or roost at any time; follow all posted park or site rules for emergence viewing, and never approach, climb toward, or shine a light on a roost. White-nose syndrome biosecurity: any footwear, clothing, or gear that has been in a cave, mine, or another bat roost elsewhere must be cleaned and decontaminated (or left behind) before this work, and never brought directly from one roost site to another. Venomous copperhead and rattlesnake species are present in Hill Country karst, cedar brake, and creekside habitat; watch foot and hand placement at all times, never reach into leaf litter, brush, or rock crevices by hand. Work in early morning or late afternoon during Hill Country summer heat, carry more water than you think you need, and take breaks in shade; bat emergence itself happens at dusk, so plan for heat exposure through the afternoon before any evening viewing window. Confirm current public access rules, visiting hours, and any ticketed-viewing requirements with Old Tunnel State Park staff (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department) before visiting; the bat-emergence viewing areas require an advance-purchase ticket for the scheduled viewing window, May through October. This survey recurs seasonally.
