Work in early morning or late afternoon during Llano Estacado / South Plains summer heat, carry more water than you think you need, and take breaks in shade or a vehicle since this treeless High Plains landscape offers little natural shade. Confirm current public access rules, visiting hours, and any seasonal closures with Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge staff (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) before visiting; refuge hunting programs and seasonal or weather-related closures can change which areas and roads are open to the public. This survey recurs seasonally.
