How this work is done

Steps

  1. 1. Confirm the address + scope with the owner/occupant and arrange access to the mechanical room, electrical panel, and attic/crawl. Observe-and-document only: no panel or HVAC work.
  2. 2. Inventory existing space + water heating: fuel (gas/electric/oil/propane), system type + age, ducted vs. ductless suitability, and any combustion appliance present (for later decommission planning by a pro).
  3. 3. Photograph the electrical panel label: main service amperage, panel make, and count of used vs. spare breaker slots; note obvious constraints (full panel, subpanels, aluminum branch wiring), as inputs for a licensed electrician's load calc, NOT a load calc yourself.
  4. 4. Record the envelope/insulation baseline: attic/wall/floor insulation presence + approximate R-level where visible, and obvious air-leakage points; use IR imaging if available.
  5. 5. Assemble a heat-pump readiness summary: what a conversion would likely require (panel capacity, dedicated circuit, ducting/ductless, envelope improvements) as a ranked readiness list, framed as inputs for licensed pros, not a design.
  6. 6. Enter photos, GPS/address, the inventory, panel observations, insulation baseline, and the ranked readiness list; sign. Route panel/service and combustion-decommission questions to licensed pros.

If it does not match the plan

  • Any live-panel hazard, exposed conductors, scorching, or double-tapped/overheated breakers -> STOP: do not open or probe further; photograph the closed panel/label only and route to a licensed electrician (NEC).
  • Combustion appliance suspected of backdrafting or improper venting -> flag for a licensed mechanical contractor; do not test-fire or decommission (CO risk).
  • Panel appears full / service undersized for electrification -> flag as a service-upgrade input; the electrician performs the load calc and any upgrade, not the agent.
  • Suspected asbestos (old duct/pipe insulation) or vermiculite in the attic -> do not disturb; flag and stop; route to a licensed abatement pro.

What counts as done

  • Photos of existing heating/water-heating systems with fuel + type + age
  • Photo of the electrical panel label with service amperage + used/spare breaker slots recorded (observation, not a load calc)
  • Insulation/air-sealing baseline (levels where visible, obvious leakage points)
  • GPS / address confirm
  • Ranked heat-pump readiness list framed as inputs for a licensed electrician / mechanical contractor
