- 1. From the public trail or forest road only, photograph the pine stand's canopy, noting the presence of large old pines with resin flow marks on the bark (a visual sign of cavity excavation activity nearby), without approaching, marking, or disclosing any specific tree's location. This work never climbs a cavity tree, installs or inspects an artificial cavity insert, handles a restrictor plate, or approaches an active red cockaded woodpecker cavity at any skill level; cavity tree work is licensed biologist work performed under federal permit. This survey documents canopy age class, midstory structure, and snag presence only, and does not photograph, record, or otherwise disclose the location of any specific cavity tree.
- 2. Note the midstory hardwood height and density beneath the pine canopy, visible from the trail.
- 3. Watch for standing dead trees (snags) near the stand and keep well clear while observing. Standing dead trees (snags) can fail and drop limbs without warning; keep at least 30 feet of stand off from any standing snag at all times and never work beneath one.
- 4. Record a ranked follow on note naming the stand for a midstory hardwood reduction crew. Check the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas current closures and burn notices before visiting, and wear blaze orange during an active hunting season.
