Standing dead trees (snags) can fail and drop limbs without warning; keep at least 30 feet of stand off from any standing snag at all times and never work beneath one. Ticks, chiggers, and venomous snakes (copperheads and cottonmouths) are present in Pineywoods leaf litter, brush, and near standing water; wear long pants tucked into boots, use tick repellent, and do a full tick check after leaving the forest. Active timber harvest, hunting, and prescribed fire operations use these forest roads; yield to and stay well clear of any logging or fire equipment. Work in early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of the East Texas Pineywoods summer heat and humidity, carry more water than you think you need, and take breaks in shade or a vehicle; heat and humidity combine here in a way that raises real heat illness risk even on a day that doesn't feel like the hottest of the year. Check the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas current closures and burn notices before visiting, and wear blaze orange during an active hunting season. This survey is post burn observation only, never conducted during an active burn.
