From FM 133 public road right of way or the WMA public headquarters/camping-kiosk area only, walk a fixed transect and photograph the brush patch structure (patch size, canopy-gap openings, and the brush-to-opening ratio) visible from the public vantage. This work never enters or disturbs a marked TPWD research plot; Chaparral WMA is an active research and demonstration area, and any closed or flagged research plot is off limits regardless of season or skill level.
- 2. Estimate and record the approximate canopy-gap percentage and typical patch size along the transect, distinguishing this from a uniform brush-density thinning survey; this documents PATTERN, not removal readiness.
- 3. Note any screening-cover clumps that appear worth retaining as-is versus areas dense enough to hold a target-size opening per the WMA mosaic prescription.
- 4. Record a ranked follow on note naming the patch for a licensed opening-creation crew. Check Chaparral WMA's current permit-based seasonal public access rules and active hunt schedule before visiting (general public use runs April 1 through August 31; outside that window the area operates on permit-based hunt access only), register at WMA Headquarters/Check Station or the Camping Area Kiosk as required, and wear blaze orange during an active hunting season.
