This work never steps off the boardwalk or maintained trail into the swamp, never wades, and never walks on saturated ground at any skill level; the dwarf palmetto swamp is fed entirely by artesian groundwater rather than rainfall, and trampling the palmetto understory or saturated swamp floor is exactly the harm this work exists to prevent. No water sample is ever collected from the artesian springs, seeps, or the San Marcos River at any skill level; no plant of any kind is ever collected; and no precise coordinate or description of a rare or unusual plant stand is ever published beyond the general work site. The San Marcos River is open water with flash-flood risk; no in-water or boat work is ever authored at any level; any river-adjacent work is bank-top only and never enters the river or wades any distance from the bank; check the current weather and any flash-flood watch or warning before starting, and leave the area immediately if the water begins to rise. Venomous snakes (including cottonmouths in and near the swamp), mosquitoes, chiggers, and poison ivy are present along the swamp trail and river bottom; watch foot and hand placement around rock, brush, and leaf litter at all times, use insect repellent, and give any snake a wide path rather than approaching it. Central Texas summer heat and humidity in the San Marcos River bottoms is severe, with high mosquito and chigger pressure in the swamp shade; work only in early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat, carry more water than you think you need, wear insect repellent and long sleeves where practical, and tell someone your planned route and return time before starting.
