How this work is done

A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.

Steps

1. 1. From the established trail only, at a stand off distance from the basin rim, photograph a hueco basin's water surface and any visible fouling (litter, sunscreen residue, film, or other contamination). This work never enters, wades in, dips a hand, tool, or any gear into, drinks from, or otherwise disturbs the water or sediment of a hueco basin at any skill level, and never enters any other pool or standing water on site. A hueco's dry season sediment holds dormant eggs of specialized crustaceans that survive years of drought in the dust of the basin floor; a boot print or hand print in a dry basin is real, lasting damage even when the basin looks empty and lifeless. All observation happens from the established trail, at a stand off distance from the basin rim.
2. 2. Note the fouling type and its approximate extent on the water surface, without approaching closer to look.
3. 3. This documents fouling of the only standing water for miles specifically, distinct from a general litter survey; state the observation point relative to a trail marker or landmark in the record, never a precise basin location.
4. 4. Record a ranked follow on note naming the observation point for a trail apron litter removal crew.

What counts as done

• Photo of the basin surface and any visible fouling taken from the established trail
• Fouling type and approximate extent noted
• Confirmation that this job never entered, waded in, dipped anything into, drank from, or otherwise disturbed the water or sediment of any hueco basin or other water on site, and stayed on the established trail at a stand off distance from any basin rim at all times; that no water sample was collected; that this work never climbed, bouldered, or scrambled on the boulders and never left the maintained trail; that no cultural or archaeological feature was mentioned, located, described, or photographed; that no organism or plant was handled or collected; that no precise location of an individual hueco basin, nest, den, or roost was recorded or published; and that reserved access, the required park permit, and park staff direction were followed, given Hueco Tanks' permit controlled daily visitor cap and Chihuahuan Desert heat, no on site water, and limited cell coverage.

The standard this serves

Watershed Health. A watershed is everything the land pours into a stream, and the stream keeps the record. The EPA's bioassessment method reads that record through the small creatures living in the gravel: mayflies and caddisflies mean clean water, only worms and midges mean trouble. Mastery looks like a person who can wade one riffle with a net and tell you how the whole valley is doing. That skill is built sample by sample.
