Steps

1. 1. Confirm the collection permission from park staff is current and, from the survey record above, that this exact stand was assessed as neither small nor of conservation concern; do not collect from any stand that fails either check. Collection from a wild stand, or sourcing material for an increase plot, never begins without permission obtained first, every time: on public land (a state park or state natural area) this means confirming with the managing agency (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department) that seed collection is permitted in the specific area and, where required, holding a written collection permit before any seed is touched; on private land it means the landowner's written consent. A park, a wildlife management area, and a road right of way each have different permission rules, and the specific rule for this exact site is confirmed with the managing agency before collecting, every time. If the wild stand is small, or the species is rare, threatened, or of conservation concern, the answer is always document only, never collect, at any skill level. This is an absolute rule with no judgment call left to the person on site: when in doubt, do not collect, and record the stand as document only instead.

Hand collect ripe seed heads using scissors or by hand into a labeled paper bag, taking no more than one in five (20 percent) of the ripe, available seed on the stand and leaving the remaining 80 percent for the population's own regeneration; estimate and record the total available seed and the fraction actually taken. No more than one in five (20 percent) of the ripe, available seed on any wild stand is ever collected in a season, leaving the plant population's own regeneration fully intact; the estimated total available seed and the fraction actually taken are both recorded in the proof record for every collection.
4. 4. Label the bag on site with the species, the general ecoregion (Blackland Prairie) and site of origin, and the collection date before leaving the park; never record a precise plant-level coordinate on the label or in any record. The precise coordinate or description of a specific collected wild stand is never published or recorded in any record from this work; every def sites to the general public park or natural area, never a named individual plant, patch, or grove, for the same reason this library never publishes a nest, den, or rare-plant location. The ecoregion and general site of origin of every collected seed lot is recorded at the moment of collection and travels with that lot, on its label, through cleaning, increase, and storage; collected seed is never moved outside the ecoregion it came from at any stage, because local adaptation only works if the seed stays local.
