Safety, read before you claim
This work never descends into the canyon, climbs, scrambles, or rappels on any canyon wall or rim rock, and never approaches the rim edge itself, at any skill level. All canyon observation happens from a set back position on established public ground, at least several body lengths back from any undercut or unstable rim edge, or from a public road; that set back distance is maintained at all times. Limestone rim edges in this canyon country are undercut in places and can fail without warning. This work never enters, wades in, dips a hand, tool, or any gear into, drinks from, or otherwise disturbs a canyon wall seep, its hanging garden of ferns and mosses, or any other spring, seep, or standing water on site, at any skill level. These hanging gardens are small, slow growing, and irreplaceable, and in this desert a seep can be the only water for miles around. All observation happens from a set back public vantage, never closer. No water sample is ever collected from a canyon wall seep, spring, or any other water on site, at any skill level. This work never mentions, locates, describes, photographs, cleans, monitors, or documents any cultural or archaeological feature at this site, at any skill level. If a photograph required by this work could include a marked rock surface, frame the photograph away from that surface. No organism living in or around a seep, hanging garden, or anywhere on site, and no plant of any kind, is ever handled or collected at any skill level; no listed species is approached or disturbed. No precise coordinate or description of an individual canyon wall seep or spring is ever recorded or published by this work; it documents and addresses conditions visible from the general public vantage or road right of way, never a named individual seep, nest, den, or roost. Terrell County is almost entirely private ranchland; this work is confined to public road right of way, public building grounds, or a resident's own home with the resident's consent, and never enters, crosses, or approaches private ranch land without an owner's direct permission, which this work does not have. Rattlesnakes are present in this landscape; watch foot and hand placement around rock, brush, and low vegetation at all times, and give any snake a wide path rather than approaching it. This is among the most remote places authored in this library: Sanderson is the only town of any size in a county of roughly 800 people spread across an area larger than Delaware, cell phone coverage is absent over most of the county, and the nearest hospital is far away. Tell someone your planned route and return time before you start, carry more water than you think you need, and do not work alone in the backcountry. Chihuahuan Desert heat in Terrell County is severe with little to no shade over open desert and canyon rim terrain; work only in early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat, carry more water than you think you need, wear sun protection and light colored breathable clothing, and take frequent shade breaks wherever any shade is available.
