Safety, read before you claim
Edwards County contains numerous caves and sinkholes, including major bat roosts and emergence sites; this work never enters, approaches, descends into, climbs down, rappels into, or locates any cave, sinkhole opening, shaft, or crevice, at any skill level, and no coordinate or description of any such opening is ever recorded or published by this work. This stand off protects the bat colonies that roost in these features as much as it protects the worker: entering a cave or sinkhole risks spreading white nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has killed millions of North American bats, on footwear, clothing, or gear carried from one roost site to another, so this work is confined entirely to the general upland surface or a public road right of way, never a karst opening itself. No water sample is ever collected at any skill level, and nothing is ever placed into a fracture, sinkhole, or other recharge feature. No organism is ever handled or collected, no wild seed is ever collected, and no plant is ever removed from the site at any skill level; no listed species is approached or disturbed. No precise coordinate or description of an individual karst opening, nest, den, or roost is ever recorded or published by this work; it documents and addresses conditions visible from the general public road right of way or open upland surface, never a named individual feature. Edwards County is almost entirely private ranchland; this work is confined to public road right of way, public building grounds, or a resident's own home with the resident's consent, and never enters, crosses, or approaches private ranch land without an owner's direct permission, which this work does not have. Rattlesnakes are present in this landscape; watch foot and hand placement around rock, brush, and low vegetation at all times, and give any snake a wide path rather than approaching it. Thorny brush (prickly pear, agarita, catclaw) is common; wear gloves and eye protection. Edwards County is thinly populated ranching country; Rocksprings is the only town of any size, cell phone coverage is unreliable to absent over much of the county's public road corridors, and the nearest hospital is far away. Tell someone your planned route and return time before you start, carry more water than you think you need, and do not work alone in the backcountry.
