No mussel, live or dead, and no shell of any kind is ever handled, collected, moved, repositioned, pried open, or taken from this site at any skill level; several Texas freshwater mussel species are state-threatened or federally listed and a spent shell found here may belong to a protected species, so taking or disturbing one is unlawful. Every shell is photographed exactly where it lies and left in place. No def in this batch records or publishes the precise location of a mussel bed or a concentration of shells; freshwater mussels cannot move away from a threat and have been poached for the shell and pearl trade, so a known bed can be stripped in a single day. Every location recorded here is the general public access point or road crossing itself, never a mapped bar or a GPS point tied to where any shell was actually seen. No water sample is ever collected at any skill level and the streambed itself is never disturbed, stepped into, probed, or altered; this work observes and records only what is visible from dry ground. Flash flooding on this river can arrive from rain falling upstream out of sight, with no rain falling at the work site itself; before starting, check the current weather and any flood or flash-flood watch for the wider Little River and Brazos River watershed, and if the water is rising, looks muddy where it was clear, or debris starts moving down the channel, leave the gravel bar or bank immediately for high ground well back from the channel and do not stop to finish a photo. A gravel or sand bar sits inside the active channel and floods first, before the surrounding bank does. Undercut banks, slick rock, and mud along this river are unstable and can fail without warning; this work never stands, kneels, or works on a bank edge, overhang, or slope that shows any undercutting, cracking, or slumping, and it stays back from any such edge. Where this work observes from a public road bridge, hi-vis is worn, the work stays on the pedestrian shoulder or walkway if one exists and never in a traffic lane, and it stands back well clear of the edge; if no safe pedestrian space exists at the bridge, the observation is made from the road right of way at the bridge approach instead, never leaning over a rail toward traffic. Texas summer heat on an open gravel bar or riverbank is severe with little to no shade; work in the cooler morning or evening hours when possible, carry more water than you think you need, wear sun protection and light colored breathable clothing, and take frequent shade breaks. Venomous snakes, fire ants, and ticks are present in riverbank grass, brush, and among rocks; watch foot and hand placement at all times and give any snake a wide path. No organism other than the shell evidence described above is handled or collected, no wild seed is ever collected, no plant is removed from the site, and no listed species of any kind is approached, netted, or disturbed. River access points in Milam County can be far from help; tell someone your planned route and return time before you start, carry a charged phone, and do not work alone at an isolated stretch of bank or bar far from town.
