- 2. Walk the firm margin slowly and count visible burrow chimneys in view, noting each one's approximate height and whether the mud looks fresh and wet or dry and crumbling, without touching or probing any chimney.
- 3. Photograph three to five representative chimneys close up for scale and condition, staying on firm ground the whole time.
- 4. Record the general zone as a rough sketch or note (not a per-burrow coordinate) and rate the site's apparent hydroperiod as short, moderate, or long based on chimney freshness and density.

- Confirmation that this work never dug into, probed, plugged, flooded, or otherwise disturbed a crayfish burrow at any skill level; that no crayfish, live or dead, was handled, captured, collected, or removed; that no individual burrow or small burrow cluster was pinned with its own precise coordinate, only the general public roadside site; that this work stayed on firm ground and never stepped onto standing water or a wet mudflat; that hi-vis was worn and the work stayed on the shoulder, clear of the travel lane; and that the ditch was checked for flowing water before starting, in compliance with the vein's full safety stack.
