With fire missing from this stretch, dead leaf litter, fallen branches and small-stem brush (redcedar seedlings among them) keep piling up along the ground instead of being cleared and recycled the way they always were. A Forest Service prescribed-fire crew needs a current, ground-level record of what has built up before the next weather window opens, and nobody is keeping one for this stretch today.

- 2. Walk a roughly half-mile stretch of the established trail or road at the site, from the trail or road itself, staying on it the entire time.
- 3. Photograph the leaf-litter, downed-wood and small-stem brush buildup at fixed, GPS-marked points every roughly 200 feet along the stretch, always from the trail or road.
- 4. Record the stretch's start and end waypoints and deliver the photo record to district staff as ground-level input to their next prescribed-fire planning cycle.
