Steps

1. Locate the dryer's exterior vent hood on the outside wall, usually low on the wall near the laundry area, and from ground level confirm by hand whether the flap opens and closes freely.
2. Clear any leaves, dirt, or debris blocking the flap's swing path by hand or with a stiff brush, working from outside only. If an active bird or insect nest is found blocking the flap, do not disturb it; leave the flap as found and note it for a later seasonal visit instead of removing occupied nest material.
3. Where the hinge or flap itself is bent, corroded, or the spring is broken, straighten or replace the hood's flap and hinge hardware with a same-size hardware-store replacement, keeping the same vent-pipe diameter.
