A brush pile left alone slowly flattens and rots into the ground, and the temporary cover it gives shrinks with it. Topping it up with fresh fallen material on a regular schedule, rather than building a whole new pile from scratch, keeps this habitat structure doing its job year after year.

Steps

1. Confirm the pile's original footprint and clearance distance still hold, and photograph its current, settled state before starting.
2. Walk the property and gather any freshly fallen branches or limbs since the last visit, by hand only, no power tool or cutting tool.
3. Add the fresh material to the loose, crisscrossed pile, refreshing gaps and hollows rather than packing the pile solid.
4. Photograph the topped-up pile from the matching before vantage and record the date and the approximate volume of material added.
