Steps
- 1. Walk the resident's own cultivated garden bed with the resident and confirm the plant's exact variety name and that it is labeled open-pollinated, not a hybrid or F1 variety; seed saved from an F1 hybrid does not come true, the next generation segregates, and it disappoints whoever borrows it later, so a hybrid-labeled plant is never marked here.
- 2. For a variety that readily cross-pollinates with a different variety of the same species growing nearby (peppers, squash, corn, and brassicas all do), confirm there is enough isolation distance from the other variety, or plan hand-pollination with a bag or cage before flowering; if isolation cannot be confirmed, mark the plant for bulk mixed seed only, not pure-variety seed, and note that limit on the tag.
- 3. Tie a bright, weatherproof marker flag or ribbon on the healthiest, most true-to-type plant chosen, before any of its fruit is picked for eating, and photograph the marked plant in place.
- 4. Record the variety name and the marked plant's location in the bed on a written tag, and photograph the tag next to the plant.
