Score the dog's or cat's body condition on the 9-point scale by rib palpation. Over half of US dogs and cats are overweight or obese, and keepers systematically underestimate it by eye. The 9-point BCS (rib palpation + waist and profile check) is the validated, no-equipment measure a keeper can learn in one session , and obesity is one of the few healthspan levers a keeper fully controls.

Steps
- 1. With the animal standing relaxed on a flat surface, view it from directly above and record the waist definition, or its absence, behind the ribs.
- 2. View the animal from the side and record the abdominal tuck, or its absence.
- 3. Palpate the ribs with light finger pressure and record how easily they can be felt: covered by excess fat, easily felt with a slight fat covering, or visible and prominent with no fat cover.
- 4. Combine the three findings to assign a single BCS from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese) per the published 9-point chart, recording which reference points drove the score.
- 5. Compare the score to the ideal 4-5 out of 9 band and record the comparison as a trend, not a diagnosis.
- 6. Record the animal's current diet, food type, and daily amount as context.
- 7. Route any score of 3 or below, or 7 or above, or any planned diet change, to a veterinarian before it is acted on.

- Out-of-band score (≤3 or ≥7), or any planned diet change, routed to a veterinarian first

What is promised, and what is not
