Steps

2. With the animal calm and gently held, never forced, lift the lips and use the flashlight to observe breath odor, visible calculus, and gum color and redline along the gumline.
3. Observe and record chewing changes, dropped food, pawing at the mouth, or reluctance to eat hard food reported by the keeper.
4. If daily brushing is not yet established, coach a gradual introduction plan: short handling sessions building to brief daily brushing with pet-safe toothpaste, and record the plan the keeper accepted.
5. Confirm and record that no home dental scaling or anesthesia-free 'dentistry' has been attempted or is planned.
6. Route any disease sign found (bad breath, calculus, red or bleeding gums, chewing changes) to a veterinarian for an anesthetized dental exam.
