• Herd log with animal IDs and prior scores
• Natural daylight (scores are unreliable under artificial light)

Steps

1. 1. Verify the scorer holds FAMACHA training/certification and the official card; record both. Without them, stop — the round cannot be recorded as FAMACHA.
2. 2. Work in natural light. Restrain each animal briefly; cover the eye momentarily, then roll the lower eyelid down with the thumb to expose the conjunctiva.
3. 3. Match the conjunctival color to the card's five categories immediately (colors fade from memory); score BOTH eyes and take the worse score.
4. 4. Record every animal's score 1-5 with its ID in the dated herd log.
5. 5. Check each animal for bottle jaw (submandibular edema), weakness, and body condition while in hand; flag findings.
6. 6. List animals scoring 4-5 — and 3s carrying risk factors (bottle jaw, poor condition, lambs/kids, late-pregnancy or heavy-lactation females) — for treatment under the herd's veterinary guidance (VCPR). Drug, dose, and withdrawal are the veterinarian's call.
7. 7. Compare the round to prior rounds; a rising share of 3+ scores is a pasture/management flag to raise with the veterinarian, not a prompt to blanket-treat.

• Every animal's score 1-5 recorded with ID, in a dated herd log kept against prior rounds
• Animals scoring 4-5 (and 3 with risk factors: bottle jaw, weakness, lambs/kids, late pregnancy) listed and routed for treatment under veterinary guidance (VCPR) — drug and dose never chosen from this packet
• Any weak, down, or bottle-jawed animal flagged for urgent veterinary attention
