Steps

1. Confirm the scorer's FAMACHA certification and training are current and that the official FAMACHA card is on hand; never score without the official card or training.
2. Restrain each animal calmly and, in natural daylight, gently roll down the lower eyelid to expose the conjunctiva.
3. Compare the conjunctiva color to the official FAMACHA card and assign a score from 1 (red, non-anemic) to 5 (white, severely anemic).
4. Record each animal's score against its ID in a dated herd log.
5. Note any additional risk factors for animals scoring 3: bottle jaw, weakness, lamb or kid status, or late pregnancy.
6. Compare the round's scores to the prior round's when one exists to track the herd trend.
7. List every animal scoring 4-5, and any risk-flagged 3, for treatment routed under veterinary guidance.
8. Flag any weak, down, or bottle-jawed animal for urgent veterinary attention ahead of completing the round.
