Score every sheep or goat in the herd for anemia using the official FAMACHA eyelid-color card. Anthelmintic resistance is now documented on most US small-ruminant operations, and every unnecessary blanket treatment makes it worse. A trained FAMACHA round treats only the animals whose eyelid color says they need it , the validated, card-in-hand way any pasture operation slows resistance while catching the anemic animals before they crash.

Steps

  1. 1. Confirm the scorer's FAMACHA certification and training are current and that the official FAMACHA card is on hand; never score without the official card or training.
  2. 2. Restrain each animal calmly and, in natural daylight, gently roll down the lower eyelid to expose the conjunctiva.
  3. 3. Compare the conjunctiva color to the official FAMACHA card and assign a score from 1 (red, non-anemic) to 5 (white, severely anemic).
  4. 4. Record each animal's score against its ID in a dated herd log.
  5. 5. Note any additional risk factors for animals scoring 3: bottle jaw, weakness, lamb or kid status, or late pregnancy.
  6. 6. Compare the round's scores to the prior round's when one exists to track the herd trend.
  7. 7. List every animal scoring 4-5, and any risk-flagged 3, for treatment routed under veterinary guidance.
  8. 8. Flag any weak, down, or bottle-jawed animal for urgent veterinary attention ahead of completing the round.

What counts as done

  • Scorer's FAMACHA certification/training noted and the official card used in natural light
  • Every animal's score 1-5 recorded with ID, in a dated herd log kept against prior rounds
  • Animals scoring 4-5 (and 3 with risk factors) listed and routed for treatment under veterinary guidance (VCPR) — drug and dose never chosen from this packet
  • Any weak, down, or bottle-jawed animal flagged for urgent veterinary attention

What is promised, and what is not

Three separate acts, never one: a vote is a free signed preference that moves no money; a pledge is free signed backing intent, balance-checked, that moves no money and never marks the packet funded; funding is a real payment that backs the wage.
