1. Approach each cow calmly from the side and rear, observing the loin, hooks, pins, tailhead, and short ribs.
2. Palpate the tailhead and loin area lightly if the cow is restrained and it is safe to do so, noting fat cover over bone.
3. Score the cow to the quarter point on the 5-point scale per the Edmonson/Ferguson chart, recording the specific visual and palpation findings that justify the score.
4. Record the cow's ID, pen or group, and stage of lactation alongside the score.
5. Compare the score to the prior round's score for the same cow or group.
6. List every cow scoring 2.25 or below, or losing condition rapidly after calving, for veterinary or nutritionist follow-up.
7. Flag any down, lame, or visibly sick cow for immediate veterinary attention ahead of completing the round.
