Gait speed is a validated 'vital sign of aging': usual pace under 0.8 m/s marks elevated risk of decline and death. It is fast, free, and gives a target that responds to strength and balance training. CrescentCare, one of New Orleans's largest community health centers and an FQHC since 2013, is part of the decentralized safety net the city built after Katrina replaced the old Charity Hospital system, a real clinician-routing path for a slow-gait flag.

  4. 4. Record 2 trials and take the faster; compute speed = 4 m / time (s) = m/s.
  5. 5. Allow habitual walking aids (cane/walker) and note them.
  6. 6. Photograph the marked walkway; log both trial times, m/s, and aids used; sign it.

  • Speed reported in m/s (faster trial kept)
