Both underfeeding and overfeeding carry real disease risk in horses , emaciation and obesity both raise laminitis and metabolic risk , yet owners routinely misjudge condition by eye, especially through a winter coat. The Henneke 9-point system turns that guess into a repeatable six-site score any horse keeper can learn in one session, and it decides whether a feeding change is safe to make at all.

Steps

1. With the horse standing square and relaxed, view and palpate the neck for fat deposition or a crest.
2. View and palpate the withers for fat cover over the bone structure.
3. View and palpate the shoulder area behind the elbow for fat cover.
4. View and palpate the ribs for how easily they can be felt or seen.
5. View and palpate the loin, the area either side of the spine behind the last rib, for fat cover and crease.
6. View and palpate the tailhead for fat deposition and softness.
7. Combine all six site findings to assign a single BCS from 1 (poor, emaciated) to 9 (extremely fat) per the Henneke chart, recording which sites drove the score.
8. Compare the score to the accepted 4-6 working range and record current forage/feed program and turnout as context.
9. Route any score of 3 or below, or 8 or above, or any planned feeding change, to a veterinarian or equine nutritionist before it is acted on.
